Condition Grading Guide

Last updated: 15 April 2026

This guide explains how Vintage Top Shelf describes the condition of vintage magazines and related printed media. As all items are pre-owned and often decades old, condition will naturally vary.

1. Overview

Vintage publications may show signs of age, handling, and storage. This grading system is intended as a general guide to help customers understand the condition of each item before purchase.

2. Grading Scale

Mint (M)

  • Appears almost as new despite age
  • Very minimal signs of handling
  • Pages clean and intact
  • No major creases, tears, or markings

Mint items are rare due to the age of many publications.

Excellent (EX)

  • Very well-preserved copy
  • Minor signs of age such as light shelf wear
  • Pages fully intact
  • Small creases or slight fading may be present

Very Good (VG)

  • Clearly used but still in very good collectible condition
  • Moderate cover wear or small creases
  • Light page yellowing consistent with age
  • Staples and binding remain secure

Good (G)

  • Noticeable wear from age and handling
  • Creases, marks, or small tears may be present
  • Pages remain readable and largely intact

Fair (F)

  • Significant wear or aging
  • Possible tears, loose pages, writing, or stains
  • Still complete enough to be collected or read

Poor (P)

  • Heavy wear or damage
  • Missing pages or major defects may be present
  • Typically sold as a collector’s or archival item

3. Important Notes

  • Vintage magazines may naturally show yellowing, staple rust, or general paper ageing
  • Any significant defects are normally described in the individual product listing
  • Images shown in listings are intended to represent the actual item being sold
